Inmitten unfassbarer Not.

20th March 2020

In the midst of unimaginable distress. Now even MAMbrella is forced to take a break, to stop.

We have been back in Athens for a month now and must interrupt our project work suddenly due to the current situation.

Most of the organizations, including us, are no longer allowed to enter the camps and local institutions have to close their doors. These measures are being taken to contain the spread of the Corona pandemic as much as possible.

A spread of the corona virus in a refugee camp would have devastating consequences. Due to the lack of infrastructure in the overcrowded camps, neither the preventive hygiene measures nor the recommended rules of conduct can be met.

We had to balance between the pros and cons: Is our work still meaningful in this extraordinary situation? Should we take the responsibility for many women and children gathering around our bus? Heavy hearted we had to answer these questions with no. We share the responsibility to protect these people in the best possible way, even though this decision was very difficult for us. MAMbrella is too small as that we could fulfil the necessary conditions.

In many of the camps around Athens, midwives have now been employed since the beginning of the year. MAMbrella can therefore be regarded as a complementary offer. Our work is increasingly focusing on education, prevention and needs-oriented as well as material support. Knowing that the women in some of the camps have a medical contact point, made our decision easier to suspend the project work for the moment. During the last days we tried to equip the midwives on site as best as possible with the necessary material for the coming period.

Should the situation relax in the near future, we have introduced a midwife colleague in Athens to the MAMbrella work. She could resume work with the mobile midwife unit at the appropriate time.

Our thoughts are with all those people who still have to endure the most difficult and inhuman conditions in the camps, especially on the Greek islands and at Europe’s external borders. A decision is currently being taken as whether to lock up precisely these vulnerable people in refugee camps. Camps where the short supply of toilet paper isn’t the main discussion point, but camps where 1'300 people have to share a water tap.

It cannot be the solution that people are locked up under such catastrophic living conditions.

We have nothing else to say but that we stand behind MSF's demand to evacuate the Greek refugee camps immediately. It is time for Europe to act now.
